The coins for the occasion of the 8th Mediterranean games held in Split in 1979 are among the most popular and most widespread gold coins with the image of Josip Broz, also the coins issued to mark the 14th Winter Olympic Games in Sarajevo.
For the occasion of the Mediterranean Games the series of coins were forged with the nominal value of 1500, 2000, 2500 and 5000 dinars.
Each of the next coins contained different motive on the back side, while the front side was always the same with the portrait of Marshal and the text surrounding it: "JOSIP BROZ TITO – POKROVITELJ VII MEDITERANSKIH IGARA SPLIT 1979", (Josip Broz Tito – sponsor of the VII Mediterranean games in Split 1979).
Gold coins of 1500 dinars
On the back side of the coin value of 1,500 dinars is a sign of the Mediterranean Games (Olympic three circles on the water) text "SFRJ JUGOSLAVIJA" in Latin and Cyrillic. There is also the word "DINARA-dinar-dinar" stamped, right and left of the nominal value. Weight of gold is 8.8gr, diameter is 24mm, the fineness of 900 and contains 7.92 grams of pure gold.The coins with the nominal value 1,500 dinars were minted in 1978 in 35,000 copies.
Gold coins of 2000 dinars.
The coin has imprinted on the back side the coat of arms of Yugoslavia, below which is a panorama of a pool at the Split Poljud stadium built especially for the Mediterranean Games. Weight 11.8gr of gold is, the diameter is 27mm. It contains 10.62gr pure gold.
Gold coins of 2500 dinars
Poljud stadium or Poljud beauty or how the people from Split affectionately call him, is adorned on a gold coin nominal value of 25050 dinars. Weight of gold is 14.7 grams, a diameter of 30mm. Contains 13.23gr of pure gold. Number of forged copies is 35000 pieces.
Gold coins of 5000 dinars
The largest gold coin in the series of gold coins minted on the occasion of the Mediterranean games has a nominal value of RSD 5,000. On the rear side it has displayed panorama of Split with the Diocletian Palace. The weight of this gold is 29.5gr, diameter is 38mm, and contains 36.55gr pure gold. This coin was minted in 15,000 copies.
