The first edition of golden coin of 50 pesos, otherwise known as Centenario, was minted in 1921. The coin was so popular that it was continued to be made in later years.
In the period between 1949 and 1972, almost four million copies were produced who had imprinted on themselves 1947 as the year of release, which is why the coins of that age are considered overprint.
In the late 1947 after the citizens of the United States were again legally allowed to own gold coins, Mexican coin of 50 pesos became one of the most popular and most wanted coin.
On the front side of the coin there is a figure of a girl with wings representing freedom, with a laurel wreath in her left hand and a roken chain in her right hand.
On the left side the nominal value is imprinted “50 PESOS” and on the right side the information on the amount of pure gold in that coin is imprinted : 37, 5 g. ORO PURO.
At the bottom two years are imprinted, 1821 the year when Mexican war for independence ended and the year of publication of the coin.
The two most famous Mexican volcanoes are shown in the background (Popocatepetl and Iztaccihautl).
On the back side Mexican emblem is imprinted, an eagle holding a snake in its beak. Around the eagle text is printed: "ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS".
Mexican coin of 50 pesos contains 1.2057 ounces of pure gold, and it is made of an alloy consisting of 90 percent gold and 10 percent copper. In diameter it is 37 mm, thickness 2,69 mm, and total weight of 41,66 grams.
