On the front side of this coin shows the motive of angel that writes the French Constitution placed on a pedestal.
To the left of the angel, behind his back, a bundle is stamped with an axe (fascis), a symbol of authority and power. To the right of the angel there is a proud rooster, which symbolizes the fighting spirit of the French Republic. Above the angels is a text REPUBLIQUE FRANCAISE (Republic of France).
The motive on the front side of this coin is shaped during the French Revolution at the end of the 18th century. That same design was used again in 1871 on the popular series of coins of 20 francs, which was issued until 1898.
The back side shows a laurel wreath of peace and progress and in the middle of which is stamped a nominal value of the coin (20 francs) and the year of publication. Above the weath is the text: LIBERTE, EGALITE, FRATERNITE (Liberty, equality, fraternity).
Weight of the coin is 6.45 gr, and its fineness is 900, which means that it contains 5.81 gr pure gold. Diameter of the coin is 21mm, and its thickness is 1.3 mm.
French gold “Angel” was considered from the very beginning that it brings luck to the persone who have it, which is why he was called “Lucky Angel”. Therefore, the captains of commercial and passager vessels had this in their pocket on their journeys, pilots in time of both world wars, as well as soldiers in combat.
