Generally the most common coin in our parts since late 19th and early 20th century, it is considered to be a mean of preserving value, which is why most citizens of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy, but also other countries in Europe bought it as a wedding gift, as a gift due to child born or simply as a stock for future. It was also used for international payments.
This coin is still manufactured in large quantities in the Austrian Mint Muenze Osterreich in the shape that had the original coin from 1915, which includes the year of publication imprinted on it. Both coins are made of gold purity of 986 (98.6% pure gold).
Single sided ducat "Franz Joseph"
In diameter it has 20 mm, its thickness is 0.7 mm and weight of 3.49 grams.
On the front side of the coin there is a character of Emperor Franz Joseph surrounded by text : FRANC IOS IDG AVSTRIAE IMPERATOR. On the other side of the coin is the emblem of Austro-Hungarian Monarchy, a double-headed Austrian imperial eagle, surrounded by the text HUNGAR BOHEM GAL LOD ILL REX A A 1915.
Quadruple ducat "Franz Joseph"
Weight of quadruple ducat is 13.96 grams, his diameter is 40 mm, and thickness of 0.7 mm.
NOn the front side of the coin emperor’s image is stamped in ceremonial clothes and there is inscription FRANC IOS IDG AUSTRIAE IMPERATOR. On the back of the coin is the coat of arms of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy, the Austrian imperial double-headed eagle with writings HUNGAR BOHEM GAL LOD ILL REX A A 1915. At the bottom of the coin there is a number 4 in brackets, which confirms the value of 4 ducats.
